Building Bridges Training is passionate about spreading the word that parents with a learning disability need good quality guidance and support.
A number of our trainers are mothers, and several other trainers have had the experience of having their children removed by social services.
Our training is for frontline services staff who work with families
We can provide bespoke training packages for parents
Parents with a learning disability deliver this training
We also offer training and resources for promoting good practice when organisations are working with parents that have a learning disability.
We can deliver a one day training event aimed at staff who work in mainstream children’s services and need to know how to deliver good support to any parents with a learning disability.
This training is co-delivered with a parent with a learning disability. Please download this leaflet or contact Liz via liz@building-bridges-training.org for more information.
We have produced a leaflet on how to run good meetings with parents with a learning disability. For a free pdf please go to our online shop.
We have written and delivered a bespoke course for parents who were undergoing child protection proceedings. It was accredited with Open College Network West Midlands Region.
It was delivered in 2 hour sessions over 10 weeks, with the parents completing a homework task and learning log in own time.
It enabled the parents to document their current parenting knowledge and through discussion with the tutor to gain new knowledge.
This course contributed to the parents having a phased return home of their child.
Building Bridges Training is a member of the Working Together with Parents Network. This is an established network for professionals to promote good support, and is an initiative of Norah Fry Research Centre at the University of Bristol.
As part of our work with the Parents Network we have run several focus groups on what parents say about assessments. For a copy please email mail@building-bridges-training.org.
We also produced a film of our messages to social workers which can be seen on the Working Together with Parents Network website.
We have had articles published about our training in Disability, Pregnancy & Parenthood International Journal (Bayliss et al. 2012) and about having children removed in Community
Living magazine (Tilly 2013).
Please contact Liz via liz@building-bridges-training.org for more information on bespoke accredited courses.
As well as training, we can also carry out research projects, consultancy, group facilitation, and user-led monitoring and evaluations.
We are based in Sandwell in the West Midlands. We can travel to venues which take one hour travel time.
Please contact us for an individual quote, which depends on the number of people we train, plus our travel costs.
